Everything You Need to Know About Breast Augmentation

If you’re interested in undergoing breast augmentation, our highly-experienced plastic surgeons in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain recommend researching the procedure so you can make an informed decision. In this article, we answered the most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation surgery to help you choose the best procedure for you.

1- Where are breast implants placed?

There are two ways surgeons place breast implants:

Under the muscle

Inserting breast implants beneath the chest muscle gives patients a more natural appearance. It also lowers the risk of inflammation and complications and helps the implants to remain upright for long periods, providing better stability and reducing the risk of them dropping or sagging over time. This technique reduces the risk of capsular contracture and helps the breast remains firm for longer.

Over the muscle

Placing the implant between the natural breast tissue and the chest muscle is more common among women with enough breast tissue, which provides natural coverage for the implant. This technique requires a shorter recovery time with less post-operative discomfort and no chance of implant distortion when flexing the muscles; however, we don’t recommend this technique for women with little breast tissue.

2- Are breast implants painful?

Since the surgery is performed under a general anesthetic, you will not feel any pain during the breast augmentation surgery. You will most likely experience discomfort below your armpits or around your breast area after the anesthetic wears off.

For the first week or two after surgery, pain killers will help you manage any post-surgical symptoms. These symptoms are temporary and will resolve once you have fully recovered.

3- How old should I be for the surgery?

It is better wait until at least 18 to make sure that your breasts have fully developed. Women at different ages have different goals; younger women usually want to improve their naturally small breasts while older women want to restore the lost volume to their breasts after childbirth and breastfeeding.

4- Should I wait to get a breast augmentation until after I have kids?

The result of breast augmentation can be affected by pregnancy and would be affected further after finished having children; These changes may require additional surgery to restore and achieve the desired breast appearance.

On the other hand, waiting until you have finished having children to get a primary augmentation is considered a reasonable option as it enables the surgeon to assess your breasts’ shape and size and determine whether you need a breast lift in conjunction with the augmentation after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

5- Should I get silicone or saline breast implants?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation; however, there is no one-size-fits-all breast implant for all women, and your choice will depend on your personal preferences, such as the preferred shape or looks.

Saline breast implants are inserted empty and then filled with sterile salt water once in place. Should the implant rupture and leak, the outer shell of the implant will collapse, and the saline liquid will be absorbed, and naturally expelled by the body. Saline implants provide a consistent shape, feel and firmness, and are FDA-approved for breast augmentation.

Silicone breast implants are known to look and feel more like natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are FDA-approved, pre-filled with a sticky, thick fluid (silicone gel) that closely resembles the feel of human fat. If a silicone implant ruptures, the implant will not collapse, and the gel will remain within the implant shell.

6- Can breast implants correct breast asymmetry?

Breasts asymmetry refers to one breast being bigger or noticeably thicker than the other; it is a relatively common issue as many women have some form of breast asymmetry though it’s usually minor that it’s undetectable under bra or clothes.

You may benefit from breast augmentation if you have an extreme case of asymmetry where one breast is significantly larger than the other. The surgeon will help you choose the suitable type of implants and will determine the appropriate size to correct the asymmetry.

7- How often should breast implants be replaced?

Many patients worry if their breast implants need to be replaced. The short answer to this question is “No.”

If your breast implants are in good shape and condition and you’re happy with the appearance of your breasts, there’s no need for any touch-up or revision procedures.

Nevertheless, Breast implants are not permanent treatments; If you get implants at a young age, there’s a good possibility you’ll need to replace them for a particular issue, such as discharges, fracture, migration, or imbalances.

The question of how long breast implants last is a point of discussion among doctors and patients, and there is no single correct answer.

8- Will breast augmentation put me at a higher risk of developing breast cancer?

This is one of the most common concerns among women when it comes to the use of implants. Several studies have concluded that women who get implants are not at a higher risk of breast cancer.

Furthermore, implants have little effect on the time it takes to discover breast cancer. Research from the National Cancer Institute suggests that having implants does not affect the ability to detect breast tumors.

9- What can I expect during a breast augmentation recovery?

Recovering from breast augmentation surgery is smoother and faster than most women believe. Traditional breast augmentation methods are known to cause inflammation and scarring, but thanks to new technologies, swelling and irritation post-surgery are massively reduced.

Several hours after surgery, my patients can take a warm shower and begin practicing arm exercises to release any knots in their chest. Most women can resume light activities within 24 hours, and many women can manage their symptoms by simply taking painkillers.
