Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What are the common diagnostic procedures for evaluating throat or neck problems?
Common diagnostic procedures include Laryngoscopy to examine the vocal cords and larynx, and Pharyngo-oesophagoscopy to assess the upper digestive tract passages. Additionally, Biopsies are used to analyze tissue samples, and Fine Needle Aspiration is used to diagnose lumps or nodules in the neck and glands. These examinations help determine the nature of the problem and establish an accurate treatment plan.

2. When does a patient need middle ear surgery or stapes surgery?
A patient may need middle ear surgery or stapes surgery when experiencing hearing loss caused by otosclerosis (stiffening of the stapes bone) or other abnormalities that interfere with sound transmission. The procedure aims to improve hearing by replacing the stiff stapes bone with a prosthetic one. It is usually recommended when medical treatments fail or when hearing loss significantly affects daily life.

3. What is the difference between cosmetic rhinoplasty and functional nasal surgery?
● Cosmetic rhinoplasty aims to improve the external shape and harmony of the nose with facial features for purely aesthetic reasons.
● Functional nasal surgery, on the other hand, focuses on correcting internal problems that interfere with breathing, such as a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates.
In some cases, both aesthetic and functional goals can be combined in a single procedure to achieve a pleasing appearance and proper nasal function.

4. When do the salivary glands become enlarged, and how can they be treated?
The salivary glands can become enlarged due to infections (bacterial or viral), blockages caused by salivary stones, autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren’s syndrome, or tumors. Treatment of enlarged salivary glands depends on the underlying cause and may include medications for infections, conservative measures such as hydration and warm compresses, or surgery to remove stones, cysts, or tumors.

5. Why is parotidectomy (removal of the parotid gland) considered highly delicate?
Parotidectomy is a surgical procedure in which part or all of the parotid gland, the largest salivary gland located in front of and below the ear, is removed. This operation is highly delicate because the facial nerve, which controls the movements of the facial muscles (such as smiling and closing the eyes), passes directly through the gland. Therefore, the surgeon’s top priority is to identify and protect this nerve during the procedure.
