Also known as piles, hemarrhoids are swollen veins in the anus and lower abdomen. Causes of hemarrhoids include straining, constipation, pregnancy, etc. These cushions of swollen tissue and blood vessels can be classified as external or internal. External hemorrhoids can cause pain, swelling and itching, while internal hemorrhoids can cause itching, bleeding, swelling, and eventually prolapse, meaning they bulge outside of the anus (hemerrhoidal disease) and usually need surgery.

Dr Hussam uses several advanced procedures to permanently mend prolapsed hemorrhoids, and these are performed as day surgeries, with almost painless recovery and a quick return to normal activities:

  • We offer rubber band ligation for grade II hemorrhoids
  • Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids (also known as PPH or stapled hemorrhoidopexy), and
  • Stapled Trans Anal Rectal Resection (STARR) using a circular stapler to remove the prolapsed tissue causing the disease.

Anal fissures

An anal fissure is a tear of the skin at the anal verge. It is caused by straining your sphincter muscles when constipated or having difficulty passing a stool. In most cases, anal fissures aren’t too deep and can heal on there own, but if there is too much pressure on the sphincter muscles they can get worse.

The first course of action is medical treatment using ointments, pain killers and stool softereners. However, if the tissue has not healed in three months and scar tissue is forming, then anal fissure surgery may be needed.

Dr Hussam will perform a day surgery to repair the damage, with painless recovery and a quick return to normal activities:

  • Surgical lateral sphincterotomy – this is usually sufficient to mend the fissure.
  • If it has reached an advanced stage, he will remedy this by creating a mucosal advancement flap (MAP).

Anal fistulas

Anal fistulas are tube-shaped passages between the outer skin of the anus and the inner rectum or anal canal. Unless they are treated, the single inflammatory tract can develop into a more complex anal fistula where the tract branches off into multiple openings.

Symptoms include pain, discomfort, pus secretion, an increase in diarrhea, and/or an extra opening somewhere near the anus.

Fistulas can also get progressively worse, so it is important have the anal area examined if you have any pain or bleeding.

Fistula surgery if often complicated but for selected cases we can offer new painless techniques to close the fistula using collagen paste .
