What is an endoanal ultrasound?
An endoanal ultrasound is a test that allows the doctor to evaluate the anatomy of the anal canal. The doctor performs the examination by placing an ultrasound scanner inside the anal canal to create an image that allows the identification of anal canal muscles and helps determining the best course of treatment.
What does the endoanal ultrasound involve?
You will be asked to take a special formula to clean your bowel at home before coming to the clinic. During the procedure, you will be asked to lay on the examination table on your left side, then the doctor will slowly insert a lubricated ultrasound probe through the anus to visualize the rectum and anal canal.
This well-tailored painless procedure usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure without the need for sedation.
You may feel some abdominal discomfort which will ease after the removal of the probe or a few minutes after the examination.
You can resume your usual activities after the examination without any limitations.
