What We Treat

Colposcopy in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain

Novomed Gynecology Department provides specialized care for women with abnormalities of the cervix, vulva, and vagina known as dysplasia. Our gynecologists offer comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and management for women with an abnormal pap smear result, HPV high-risk positive detection, or atypical bleeding.

What is a colposcopy?

Colposcopy is a procedure to closely examine your cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease. During colposcopy, your doctor uses a special instrument called a colposcope.

Your doctor may recommend a colposcopy if your Pap test result is abnormal. If your doctor finds an unusual area of cells during your colposcopy procedure, a sample of tissue can be collected for laboratory testing (biopsy).

Why is it done?

Colposcopy can be used to diagnose:

  • Genital warts
  • Inflammation of the cervix
  • Precancerous changes in the tissue of the cervix
  • Precancerous changes in the tissue of the vagina
  • Precancerous changes of the vulva

How do I prepare for colposcopy?

You do not need to do anything specific to prepare for your colposcopy examination. You do not need to bring anyone with you, but some women like to bring someone so that they have someone to talk to in the waiting room and take them home after the procedure if they are feeling unwell.

What happens during a colposcopy examination?

During the consultation, our specialist will review your medical history and present symptoms then you will be taken to the examination room where you will be asked to undress from the waist down. A nurse will then help you get into a comfortable position on the examination chair.

During the examination, an instrument called a speculum is inserted into your vagina to hold back the vaginal walls to get a better view of the cervix. The specialist then uses a colposcope; a type of magnifying glass that allows them to look closely at the cervix.

A liquid is then applied to the cervix so that our specialist can look for any abnormal-looking areas. They may then take one or two tiny samples of tissue from your cervix. Some women say that the biopsy is painless, while others say that it hurts slightly and gives them crampy, period-like pains. This crampy pain often only lasts for a few minutes.

After the examination, the speculum will be taken out, and you will be asked to stay on the examination couch for a few minutes. The assisting nurse will then tell you when you can get up and get dressed. Once you are dressed, you will go back to see the specialist who will talk to you about the examination.

If the specialist didn’t take a biopsy sample during your colposcopy, you won’t have any restrictions on your activity once your exam is complete. You may experience some spotting or very light bleeding from your vagina in the next day or two.

The results of your colposcopy will determine whether you will need any further testing and treatment.
