What We Treat

Gastric Plication in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Overview

Gastric plication surgery, also known as Laparoscopic Gastric Greater Curvature Plication or Gastric Imbrication, is a restriction technique that reduces the stomach size by around 75%. The procedure includes “tucking in” the stomach’s exterior curved part, causing the patient to feel full sooner, which translates to them eating less. This method can be utilized as an initial weight-loss procedure or as an option for revision weight loss surgery.

Am I a suitable candidate for gastric plication surgery?

To be eligible for gastric plication, you must have a BMI of 40 or higher. Patients with BMI between 30 and 39.9 may be suitable candidates for this procedure if they have a severe obesity-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. If you have a BMI between 30 and 39.9 but are not diagnosed with any of the those conditions, the non-invasive gastric balloon surgery may be a better option.

How to prepare for gastric plication surgery?

During your consultation, our bariatric surgeon will review your medical history, run some blood tests, ask you about the prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements and vitamins you are taking, and discuss your goals and expectations from the surgery. Finally, they will provide you with a list of instruction to follow before surgery, including when to start fasting and what medications you should stop taking to avoid any complications during or after surgery.

How is the surgery performed?

You will receive antibiotics and an anesthetic before surgery, so you will be asleep through the process and won’t feel any discomfort.

The whole procedure takes between 1 and 2 hours to complete. Your surgeon will begin by making six tiny incisions in your belly to insert a laparoscopic camera and surgical instruments to fold and stitch the stomach. The stomach folds diminish the size of your stomach by roughly 75%.

Once finished, the surgeon will close the incisions, and you will be transferred to the recovery room.

What happens after gastric plication surgery?

Our medical staff will provide you with intravenous medications shortly after the procedure to prevent vomiting and nausea. You’ll also be given small sips of water every 4 to 6 hours to ensure that you can retain liquids and will not vomit them. You will be ready to be discharged after 1 or 2 days if you are recovering well and don’t have any complications.

You will be prescribed proton pump inhibitors for one to three months. Your nutritionist will advise a liquid diet for the first week after surgery, while the second week will consist of pureed foods.

During the third and fourth weeks following surgery, you will consume only semi-solid foods, allowing you to progressively introduce solid foods in subsequent weeks and adjust to your new healthy lifestyle.

Your surgeon may also recommend taking multivitamins and iron supplements for an entire year following surgery; This prevents malnutrition or vitamin shortages while adjusting to your new physique and diet.

It is crucial to remember that you must attend your follow-up consultations as instructed by your doctor. Compliance with follow-up sessions is essential since it enables us to track your progress, evaluate your treatment’s efficacy, and aid you in reaching your weight-loss objectives.

What is the result of gastric plication?

The gastric plication surgery, like other laparoscopic operations, leads to quicker recovery and less scarring than open surgery. Patients are usually able to return to their everyday routines within ten days.

Patients should anticipate losing 40-60% of their excess body weight within the first year after surgery. Previous weight-related illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol may also improve, as with other bariatric procedures.

FAQs

How is the Gastric Plication different from other procedures?

Several features distinguish the plication procedure from other techniques for weight loss. Unlike gastric bypass or gastric sleeve treatments, no stomach section is removed, nor is the digestive system rerouted, making the gastric plication safer and reversible.
