Bariatric surgery is extremely effective at treating diabetes in obese patients, particularly when considering that the risk of death from diabetic complications is greater than the risk of death from surgery. Bypass surgery has also been shown to reduce the risk of developing diabetes in non-diabetic obese patients afterwards.
An extensive American study conducted over a five-year period showed that laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass resulted in significant weight loss (60% of excess weight) and resolution in 83% of Type 2 diabetes patients. Patients with the mildest form and shortest duration of diabetes had a highest rate of resolution after the surgery, suggesting that the earlier the surgical intervention, the better the chances of complete remission. As weight loss is maintained post-surgery, these are likely to be long-term results.
Interestingly, there is some indication that bariatric surgery can also improve diabetes condition independent of weight loss and research is ongoing into the idea of extending this type of surgery to moderately overweight diabetics.
