Buffalo Hump Removal

What is Buffalo Hump?

Buffalo hump, sometimes referred to as hunchback, is a term used to describe a noticeable lump of fat, found on the back, between the shoulders at the base of the neck. In some severe cases, these fat accumulations can continue to gather and grow upwards, towards the ears, and continue towards the frontal area of the neck. Buffalo humps can cause pain and discomfort but are usually painless. You may be considering buffalo hump removal if:

  • You have a noticeable hump on your upper back
  • Your neck movements are restricted
  • Your sleeping patterns are affected
  • You have noticed significant physical changes in your upper back area
  • You feel that the hump on your back is affecting your quality of life

How is Buffalo Hump Diagnosed?

Buffalo hump is detected with a physical exam and diagnostic analysis. You will be asked about your medical history and any additional symptoms you may have been experiencing. After conducting the physical exam, the doctor will order tests to identify the underlying cause of the hump. Some common tests may include:

  • Blood test
  • Bone density test
  • CT scan
  • X-ray
  • MRI

There are various reasons that a buffalo hump may occur and can be the result of:

  • Side effects of medications
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Obesity
  • Certain health conditions
  • Poor posture
  • Osteoporosis
  • Injury
  • Spinal abnormalities
  • Genetics

What are the Treatment Options for Buffalo Hump?

The most common method of buffalo hump removal is liposuction. Your plastic surgeon will not only remove excess fat, but he or she will create a more aesthetically pleasing upper back and lower neck contour. Removing this fat accumulation can restore neck mobility, alleviate neck and back discomfort and/or pain, and the affected areas can be recontoured to produce a leaner appearance.

Depending on the doctor’s decision, he or she may use general or local anesthesia during the procedure.

Liposuction of the neck and upper back area results in minimal scarring once the healing process is complete, as the liposuction cannula is inserted through a tiny incision. Consult with one of Novomed’s expert surgeons today and learn whether you are the right candidate for buffalo hump removal.
