What’s the Difference Between Facelift and a Neck Lift?

Facelifts and neck lifts are two of the most commonly performed surgeries to dramatically reduce signs of aging in the neck, face, and surrounding areas. At Novomed, our team of western trained board-certified plastic surgeons will help you decide which one of the methods is right for you. Allowing an expert to assess your concerns is the first step in learning which procedure or combination of procedures is right for you.

Each one of these surgical procedures lead to different results, hence why it is important to understand their differentiation. Facelifts and neck lifts share a commonality in significantly improving weak muscles and sagging skin and they produce long-term results. However, understanding their differences can help set more realistic expectations for the results you desire.

These cosmetic surgeries address the concerns of the face, neck, or all areas, but are often confused by patients in terms of results. Continue reading and learn how to differentiate between these commonly requested surgical procedures that provide varying results.

Facelift

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that aims to tighten and lift the facial skin and soft tissues from the mid and lower areas of the face. A facelift can smooth out folds and wrinkles below the eyebrow line down to the jawline but cannot address forehead wrinkles and sagging skin on the neck (turkey neck).

Facelifts are commonly combined with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), or a brow lift. Combining these methods can address concerns such as sagging skin on the eyelids, eye bags, and a drooping eyebrow. You may be considering a facelift if you have the following indications.

  • Your face has changed shape due to weight loss or aging
  • You wish to restore a youthful appearance
  • You have excess skin around the jawline (jowls)
  • You desire natural-looking and long-lasting results
  • You have noticeable loose skin around the jawline, cheeks, nasolabial folds, and areas    around the mouth

Mid-Facelift

A mid-facelift (vertical facelift) focuses on rejuvenating the central section of the face. From the lower eyelid line to the upper lip line, a mid-facelift repositions sagging cheek tissues (malar fat pad) and enhances the volume of soft tissue in the midface.

This procedure surgically tightens and elevates droopy cheeks and can restore a more youthful appearance of the cheekbones, under-eye hollows, and nasolabial folds. This procedure does not address the jawline and lower section of the face. You may be the right candidate if:

  • You have saggy cheeks
  • Your muscular structure of the mid-face is loose
  • You have noticeable nasolabial creases
  • You have under-eye hollows
  • You have a loss of facial volume in the mid-face

 Neck Lift

Just as a facelift, the skin is elevated off the underlying tissue and then re-attached with the excess skin being removed. During a neck lift, the surgeon will tighten the skin and the muscles of the neck are to create a smoother and more defined appearance from the jawline to the collar bone.

A neck lift is performed to address muscle descent, skin laxity, and inflation of the neck, jawline, and collarbone area. This procedure is commonly performed with a facelift; however, it can be done on its own if:

  • Your neck skin appears older than your facial skin
  • You see sagging skin on the neck (turkey neck)
  • You have deep creases on the neck (neck bands)
  • You have draping excess skin on the neck and jawline (jowls)
  • You are at a healthy weight, but your neck makes you appear overweight
