Varicose Veins
What is the Difference Between Varicose Veins and Spider Veins?
Although varicose veins and spider veins (mini-varicose veins) have a lot in common, however, the main differentiation is in appearance. Varicose veins are larger, deeper, and bulging veins. Spider veins are smaller, more superficial blood vessels that appear in various colors, such as, purple, red, and blue. Spider veins typically do not hurt, whereas varicose veins can be very painful.
The following symptoms are indications that you may be dealing with varicose or spider veins:
- You feel burning, throbbing and/or itching sensations in the legs
- Your legs feel tired
- You experience leg muscle cramps
- Your ankles and/or legs are swollen
If varicose veins are not treated, the following complications may arise:
- Sores on the lower leg (ulcers, venous stasis)
- Spontaneous bruising
- Blood clots
- Superficial Thrombophlebitis
- DVT (deep venous thrombophlebitis)
- Pulmonary embolism
If you suspect you are suffering from one of the complications listed above, consult with one of Novomed’s vascular experts.
What are the Treatment Options?
-
Non-Surgical Vein Treatments
-
ELVT (endovenous laser treatment)
This method of treatment uses laser heat to treat varicose veins. The heat is sent into the vein through a flexible, thin tube (catheter), that closes off blood flow in the problematic vein.
-
VenaSeal
Unlike ELVT, this method of treatment does not use heat. VenaSeal treatment uses a special adhesive liquid. In some cases, ultrasound may be used during the treatment, to assist accurate delivery of the adhesive liquid. A catheter is inserted into the vein through which liquid is inserted into the vein. This liquid will begin to seal the vein once it has reached its destination.
-
Sclerotherapy Injection Treatment (liquid or foam)
Sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment. These injections are placed directly into the vein that requires treatment. In some cases, this treatment may be performed under ultrasounds control.
Surgical
A surgical procedure for varicose veins is a less common option, whereas at Novomed all of our treatments are performed with radiofrequency, and sclerotherapy. Non-surgical methods of treatments for varicose veins have minimal downtime and are done under local anesthesia with minimal or no discomfort.
