A double chin is a term often used to refer to the fullness under the chin. It is an unwanted condition that many people complain about and it occurs mainly when excess fat accumulates under the chin and around the neck creating a crease that looks as if the person has a secondary chin. Moreover, an ill-defined jawline can also give the appearance of a double chin.
The appearance of a double chin can affect confidence and may even make those who have the condition look older or heavier than they are.
Luckily, at Novomed, we have a variety of treatments available to help get rid of this problem and enjoy a healthy well-defined look.
The excess volume under the chin can be caused by several factors, including:
- Loose Skin
- Excess neck fat
- Small/weak chin
- Drooping salivary gland
- Sagging platysma Muscle
Double chin usually appears due to a combination of these factors and not just excess fat like what many people would assume.
A double chin or a fullness under the chin can affect both men and women and aging is one of the main reasons for this condition. As we age, we lose skin elasticity, which makes the skin more susceptible to sagging. Some people are prone to have fullness under the chin due to genetic factors. Weight gain can also have an effect, and it is particularly difficult to remove fat in this area despite exercise and diet.

Double Chin Removal Options
Double Chin Liposuction Methods:
Microscopic liposuction is a great option to reduce the appearance of a double chin. A local anesthetic will be used then a saline solution will be injected into the area to be treated; This is known as tumescent fluid. The tumescent fluid does not only numb the area to be treated, but also causes the target area to swell and become firm which helps separate the fat cells from the surrounding tissues. A small incision is then made, and fat is removed with a microcannula. On average, about 10-20 ml of fat can be removed through this method which is often more than enough to reduce the appearance of a double chin or fullness under the chin.
You will notice an immediate change in the shape of the lower part of your face after the procedure, but it may take 3-4 weeks to see the full result.
After removing the fat cells, the results of this procedure are permanent, but you will have to maintain an ideal weight. The downtime associated with this procedure is minimal and many patients return to work after 48 hours and are able to return to their usual activities within 7 days. Your surgeon will advise you on what to do during the recovery period after the surgery.
Vaser liposuction for chin and neck is an effective treatment option for this area, as it enables expert precision to help patients redefine the chin and neck area quickly. The results are often visible across the entire lower part of the face.
Vaser liposuction is usually performed under local anesthesia. Small incisions will be made in the treatment area and a tumescent fluid will be injected inside to expand the tissue area. Then a small probe is inserted into the incisions which emits ultrasound energy that vibrates and breaks up the fat tissue in the area. After that, a small cannula is used in a back and forth motion to remove the fat with a gentle suction. The incisions will then be closed, and a compression garment will be applied.
The result of Vaser liposuction is immediate, but you will not be able to see the full result until swelling and bruising fade away which typically takes 5-6 weeks.
The results are designed to be permanent if you maintain a healthy weight.
Patients are usually advised to allow 2-3 weeks for total recovery after Vaser liposuction. Many patients can return to their daily activities a few days after the procedure. We usually recommend at least one week off from work just to allow any swelling and bruising to ease and fade.
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive fat-reducing treatment that can be performed on the chin/neck area to get rid of the appearance of a double chin.
This fat freezing treatment involves the use of a device that freezes the fat cells in the target area while preserving the skin and surrounding tissues. Once the treatment is complete, your body will naturally process and remove the fat cells.
The results from CoolSculpting are gradual as it can take four to six months for all targeted fat cells to be naturally eliminated from the body.
However, patients can expect to achieve a reduction of 20% -25% of fat overall. Some patients may require more than one treatment to experience optimal results.
CoolSculpting requires little to no downtime and patients often return to their daily activities right after treatment.
A neck lift is a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of the jawline and neck. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are made under the chin and behind the ears based on the chosen technique.
The Platysma muscle is tightened, and any excess skin or fat is removed then the incisions are closed.
Swelling and bruising are normal after a neck lift, and the results will be clear after three to six months. Neck Lift results are long-lasting, but this depends on the natural aging process of your skin.
This procedure requires some downtime and it is usually recommended that you take one to two weeks off to recover completely. You will experience swelling and bruising that will gradually fade over a span of a few weeks.
