How do I prepare for rhinoplasty, and what does it involve?

Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your surgical goals and expectations. During your consultation, the doctor will ask you questions about your medical history, conduct a physical examination, examine your overall health, and take photographs of your nose from different angles.

The surgeon will examine the architecture of your nose and other facial features to inform you if your expectations are realistic. They will also explain all the potential risks associated with rhinoplasty.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make cuts inside the nostrils. They will then reshape the interior bone and cartilage to provide you with a more attractive appearance.

Your doctor can change the form of your nasal bones or cartilage using various techniques, depending on how much needs to be removed or added, the structure of your nose, and the available materials. To finalize the procedure, the surgeon stitches the incisions in your nose and replaces the nose’s skin and tissue.

Additionally, the surgeon can correct the septum (the wall between the two sides of the nose) if it is curved or crooked (deviated) to facilitate breathing.

What happens after surgery?

Most people will need to wear a nasal splint for the first week after a nose job. After the procedure, you must keep your head elevated for at least 24 hours. Downtime can range from 5 to 7 days, with the splint removed on the 7th day.

To prevent bleeding and swelling, you should relax in bed with your head raised higher than your chest after surgery. Your nose may be stuffy because of swelling or the splints inserted inside your nose during the procedure. Any swelling or bruising may take up to two weeks to resolve entirely. After 3 to 4 weeks, patients can safely return to normal activities, such as swimming and jogging. However, they will need to wait about 6 weeks post-operation to resume resistance workouts.

The final result of the surgery will be noticeable after about a year when the swelling has subsided completely. The results of rhinoplasty will last for a long time. Your new appearance will last longer if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and use sun protection all of your life.
