Investigations

At your appointment, you may undergo a triple diagnostic evaluation that includes:

  • Consultation and physical examination with a consultant breast surgeon
  • Breast imaging, which can be an ultrasound scan, a mammogram, or both
  • If the imaging shows any irregularities, then a sample of breast tissue cells (biopsy) is taken for analysis

We use the most advanced imaging techniques that help us detect and diagnose any underlying problem at early stages with minimal to no radiation. These diagnostic procedures may include one or more of the following:

Breast ultrasound

This imaging technique uses sound waves to look for breast lumps and other breast abnormalities or to examine an issue captured on a mammogram. The procedure involves applying gel to the breast and examining the breast tissue with a handheld probe. If the area requires further examination, the consultant radiologist will take a tissue sample using ultrasound to determine the exact area. Samples can be taken by fine-needle aspiration or breast biopsy.

Mammogram

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that allows early detection of underlying breast changes in women experiencing no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. During a mammogram, the breasts are compressed between two firm surfaces to spread the breast tissue. Then the X-rays take black and white images of the breasts. These images appear on an external display to be examined by the doctor for any signs of cancer.

Breast biopsy

A breast biopsy is a procedure to remove a small sample of breast tissue for testing in a laboratory. A breast biopsy provides a sample of tissue that doctors use to identify and diagnose abnormalities in the cells that form breast lumps, abnormal changes in the breast, or findings that are suspicious and fearful of the results of a mammogram or ultrasound. A lab report about a breast biopsy can help determine whether a woman needs additional surgery or other treatment.

Breast MRI

Breast MRI uses radio waves and powerful magnets to create detailed images of the inside of the breasts, which helps the doctor to diagnose breast cancer and other breast diseases and conditions. A breast MRI takes multiple images of your breast, which are combined using a computer to create detailed pictures.

Fine needle aspiration

This procedure involves using a fine needle to collect breast cells to examine them for abnormalities under a microscope. More than one sample may be needed to ensure that an adequate amount of tissue has been taken.
