Cone biopsy is a surgical procedure where the doctor surgically removes a piece of cone-like tissue from the cervix. Usually, the cone-like piece includes tissue from both the upper and lower parts of the cervix. A conical biopsy can be performed to diagnose and sometimes treat abnormal cervical tissue. The abnormal tissue is removed and sent to the laboratory for examination.
A sample of tissue can be removed for a Cone biopsy using:
- Surgical knife (scalpel).
- CO2 laser.
- Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP).
Why it is done:
- Cone biopsy can be performed after the cervical test shows moderate to severe cell changes.
- Cone biopsy is performed to remove and examine abnormal tissue.
- Cone biopsy can be used to diagnose the cause of abnormal changes in cells and remove abnormal tissue at the same time.
- Cone biopsy can determine the extent, depth and severity of cancerous tissues and can guide treatment decisions.
How it is done:
A Cone biopsy is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general or local anesthesia does not require staying the hospital.
Your doctor will give you instructions on how to prepare for surgery.
During the procedure, you will lie on your back at the test table with your legs and feet raised with the support of medical exam stirrups. Your doctor will insert a lubricated tool called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum allows examination of the inner part of the vagina and cervix.
After a cone biopsy:
- Vaginal bleeding is normal for up to one week.
- Bloody or dark brown vaginal discharge may occur for 3 weeks.
- Sanitary pads should be used in place of tampons for 3 weeks.
- Intercourse should be avoided for a minimum of 3 weeks.
You should call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:
- Fever
- Mild to severe bleeding
- Pelvic pain
- Foul-smelling or yellow looking vaginal discharge may indicate an infection
- Redness and swelling
