Fibromyalgia Treatment in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Overview

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes muscle and joint pain, as well as fatigue, sleep, cognitive, and mood problems. This condition is more common in women and people with lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Fibromyalgia has no cure, but symptoms can be managed effectively with medication, therapy, and lifestyle modifications.

What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia’s common symptoms include:

– Migraine or headaches

– Anxiety and depression

– Vision problems

– Nausea

– Skin problems

– Trouble sleeping or sleep disruptions

– Joint pain and morning stiffness

– Concentration and memory problems

– Face or jaw pain (known as Temporomandibular disorder (TMJ))

– Digestive problems (such as Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS))

If muscle pain and other symptoms persist for more than 3 months and are not caused by other disorder, the doctor might diagnose you with fibromyalgia.

What are the causes of fibromyalgia?

The cause of fibromyalgia is still unknown, but various factors have been linked to the onset of the condition, including:

– Genetics (fibromyalgia runs in families in some cases)

– Infections

– Sleep deprivation

– Lack of physical activity

– Physical trauma (a serious physical injury)

– Emotional trauma (such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

How is fibromyalgia diagnosed?

During your consultation, our rheumatologist will go over your medical and family history and ask about your symptoms. They will perform a physical examination to check the sensitive places on your body and rule out other potential causes of muscular pain. The doctor may also order blood tests to rule out other disorders with similar symptoms.

How is fibromyalgia treated?

Fibromyalgia is usually managed with a combination of different treatment options, which may include:

  • Self care measures

People with fibromyalgia can manage their condition following self-care measures, including exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and getting enough sleep every day. It would also be helpful to avoid stressful situations and do meditation or yoga.

  • Medications

Medications including over-the-counter pain medications (such as Ibuprofen) and antidepressants (such as Cymbalta) may help with the pain and exhaustion associated with fibromyalgia. Anti-seizure medicines (such as Neurontin) are also effective in reducing symptoms and lowering certain forms of pain.

  • Therapy

Therapy can help you manage the effects of fibromyalgia on your mind and body. Examples of therapy are:

Physical therapy. A physical therapist can teach you exercises that enhance strength and flexibility.

Psychological therapy. Speaking with a therapist can treat underlying psychological problems and teach you coping strategies for stressful situations.
