Overview

A septate uterus is a thin tissue membrane that divides the uterus into two separate parts. This uterine deformity occurs during pregnancy and can cause female infertility, preterm birth and recurrent miscarriage.

A septate uterus doesn’t cause any symptoms other than a miscarriage or recurrent miscarriage and is usually diagnosed while investigating the cause of miscarriages or during a routine pelvic exam when the septum extends to the cervix and vagina.

The surgeon will gently stretch the cervix while you are sedated and then guide the hysteroscope, a thin tube with a camera at its end that allows the doctor to see the inside of the uterus, into your uterus through the vaginal opening, and another instrument is inserted to cut away and remove the septum.
