Overview
A chalazion is a red bump in the eyelid that develop when one of the oil-producing glands close to the eyelash becomes clogged and irritated, resulting in swelling.
A chalazion usually isn’t painful and goes away without treatment within a few weeks. However, if your chalazion does not heal after a month and becomes an annoyance or affects your eyesight, our ophthalmologist may recommend a chalazion excision; surgical removal of the chalazion through incision and drainage to speed up the healing process.
How to prepare for the procedure?
During the consultation, our ophthalmologist will walk you through the steps involved in chalazion excision, including pre-op preparations and recovery.
To avoid any complications during the procedure and recovery, tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, and herbal remedies.
On the day of the surgery, you may want to wear a shirt or blouse that buttons or zips in the front, so you don’t have to pull it over your head when you get back home. Moreover, avoid putting on makeup or wearing contact lenses on the day of your surgery.
What happens during the procedure?
Chalazion excision is performed as an outpatient procedure and usually takes around 10 to 20 minutes to complete.
Our ophthalmologist will numb the area around the chalazion using a local anesthetic and hold your eye open using a clamp. They will then make a small incision in the eyelid and remove the fluid accumulated within the chalazion using a surgical device called a curette. The size of the chalazion determines where the incision is made; if it is small, the incision is made on the inner eyelid, and if it is large, the incision is made on the outer eyelid. After removing the chalazion, the clamp will be removed, and the incision will be closed with dissolvable stitches.
What happens after the procedure?
Recovery takes around a week, but that may vary depending on the location and size of the chalazion.
You may experience some temporary side effects from chalazion surgery, including eyelid discomfort, bruising and swelling, blurry vision, and minimal oozing from the surgical site.

- Using cold compresses to reduce swelling
- Applying antibiotic creams or drops to help prevent eye infection
- Avoiding contact lenses, rubbing your eyes, and wearing makeup to help prevent infection
- Avoiding strenuous activity to help reduce bruising
